Dear Dermot,
It was with great regret that we received your letter of complaint following the Top Golfer event at Dromoland. We greatly value the Scratch Cup event and the time your competitors took to play our course on Sunday and the feedback we received, while appreciated, is very disappointing for us. We consistently strive to meet the highest standards across the Dromoland Estate and the condition of our golf course is no different in that respect.
To give you some context, in 2014 we embarked on an ambitious program of grass species conversion on our putting surfaces. Converting to creeping bent grass is a more sustainable option for the future while also providing excellent playing surfaces. It was envisaged that the process would take approximately five years to achieve our desired result. As well as aggressive overseeding and a reducing of our fertiliser usage, we have also been required to aerate frequently and apply moderate amounts of sand for over 2 years now. Due to record levels of rainfall in July and the rescheduling of other club events, essential works on seven greens was delayed until last week. However, while not being easy on the eye, we were confident that this work would not adversely affect putting quality and ball roll. We mowed greens daily and rolled several times including Sunday morning, but obviously the end result was not to the satisfaction of the golfers who played. This is regretful indeed and again we had done our utmost to recover the greens to an acceptable level of playability. In contrary to some of the suggestions, the greens had not been holotyned.
On behalf of all the team at Dromoland Golf & Country Club, please accept our sincere apologies. We greatly value the Scratch Cup event and the time your competitors took to play our course on Sunday. To make up for the disappointment they experienced and as a gesture of goodwill, we would like to offer a complimentary round of golf for two to those who played in the event. Whilst we cannot undo the experience of the Scratch Cup we are confident that conditions are significantly better at nearly all other times of the year. If they would like to take up the offer to visit again please ask them to contact me directly and I can arrange the same for any time through to the 31st May 2018.
Kind Regards,
Mark.
